193rd anniversary of the Battle of Three Emperors in the year 1998
Press responses
"Chiefly from
an organizational point of view, it is a great improvement from previous years,"
Václav Grulich, Minister for Internal Affairs, who is the patron of the commemorative
events, commented.
[Moravian newspaper, Rovnost]
The reconstruction of battle
scenes attracted over 6,000 spectators to Tvarozná near Brno on Saturday... 450
soldiers, 18 cannons, and 10 horses participated in the impressive reenactment... Besides
the battle in Tvarozná, visitors could visit the historical military encampment where
soldiers practiced their drill, taverns were set up on the village green, and Saturday
evening closed with merry making. The commemorative events in Slavkov (Austerlitz) also
included the traditional "Jiříkov fires" and a ceremony at Mohyla míru (peace
monument) on Sunday.
[Lidové noviny, no.280, year XI)]
Last Saturday afternoon,
several thousand people gathered at the foot of Santon hill to watch battle scenes from
the famous Battle of Three Emperors, which even at this time, 193 years after the original
event on 2 December 1805, ended in victory for Napoleon's troops. 450 soldiers in
authentic uniforms, with over a dozen cannons and horses, lined up on the battlefield at
Slavkov. Authentic taverns were set up at the military encampment where mead, roasted meat
on a spit, and mulled wine were served.
